  1. Menippean satire was a form of Greek and Roman literature developed 
  2. by the Greek writer Menippus in the early 3rd century B.C. It combined 
  3. prose and poetry to criticize conventional institutions and accepted 
  4. ideas. Within the tales the author often digressed, airing his views on 
  5. topics that had nothing to do with the plot.
