Menippean satire was a form of Greek and Roman literature developed
by the Greek writer Menippus in the early 3rd century B.C. It combined
prose and poetry to criticize conventional institutions and accepted
ideas. Within the tales the author often digressed, airing his views on
topics that had nothing to do with the plot.
